Dynamic Position Course
Maritime engineering simulation training
Based on international standard, in order to overcome the fickle environment and adverse weather on sea, most of ships which work for offshore wind need dynamic positioning (DP) system. Furthermore, DP operator also need professional training to get certificate. MTIC is planning to build a complete simulation room which is including DP system, offshore crane system and navigation system. In the near future, MTIC can provide dynamic positioning operator training (NI), offshore crane operator training (OPITO) and project simulation service.
Why we need DP?
Dynamic Positioning, DP was initially developed for the installation and maintenance of offshore oil rigs and supporting structures. In offshore wind operations, including diving support, foundation installation, wind farm construction, and marine or seabed surveys, anchoring is often impractical due to the presence of subsea cables and other structures. As a result, vessels rely on DP systems to maintain precise positioning and perform tasks efficiently.
DP has below advantages:
1. Protection of Subsea Assets: Prevents anchors from damaging subsea cables, pipelines, or structures.
2. Operational Efficiency: Enables vessels to quickly reposition, improving efficiency, especially during multi-point operations.
3. Stability and Safety: Ensures stability in challenging weather and sea conditions, protecting both personnel and equipment.
4. Versatility: Supports a wide range of offshore tasks, from construction and maintenance to diving support and surveys.
Application for DP in offshore wind
Modern offshore wind vessels—including Heavy Lifting Vessels (HLVs), Offshore Support Vessels (OSVs), Pipe and Cable Laying Vessels (CLVs), and Service Operation Vessels (SOVs/CSOVs)—are all equipped with DP systems, whether newly built or retrofitted. The use of DP ensures stable and precise positioning, prevents damage to subsea cables and structures, and facilitates the smooth execution of critical offshore wind operations.
DP Course
Item | Requirement |
---|---|
DP Induction | Qualified Deck/Engine/ETO or MVQs can enroll this course as the initial of DPO scheme. |
DP Simulator | Those who completed DP Induction, obtained the required Sea time days, and passed NI online examination. |
DP Revalidation | Certified DPO can take revalidation course without sea time requirements when taken for the first time, or when taken after a subsequent revalidation within 150 DP sea time days. |
DP Sea Time Reduction | Personnels who completed DP Simulator can take this course to reduce the required DP Sea time days by a maximum of 30 days. |
